Power of Now: 6 Simple Ways to Live in the Now

Are you really living in the now? Spending too much time on a smart phone

When you really think about it, the past and the future are just concepts – you cannot live in either of them. The only ‘time’ that truly exists to us is the present, yet so many of us struggle to live in the moment. We spend our days stressing over the past or worrying about what the future will bring, living in a time that doesn’t really exist.

After all, you cannot change the past and your future is not yet written, it’s what you do now that matters. That’s why this guide outlines six simple steps to help you live in the now and learn how to understand the ‘Power of Now’.

Remember, sometimes thoughts are just thoughts

We can all get stuck inside our heads every now and then, and become lost in unpleasant thoughts or worries. So it’s important to remember that you are not your thoughts and that most of the time, the things we worry about never even happen! Once you’re able to get a grip on this, even if you can’t banish your worries, you can take them for what they are – just thoughts in your head. This helps you to come back to the present and stop worrying about what’s to come.

Let go of anything that doesn’t bring you joy

You’ve probably heard of Marie Kondi by now. Her philosophy states that you should get rid of anything that doesn’t bring joy to your life and that includes everything from clothes to people! Holding onto things that no longer make you happy can cause you to dwell on the past or feel stressed about the future. To only keep things that bring you joy in the now is the best way to stay happy and present. Take in the small moments that make up every day

Sometimes we find ourselves going about our day on autopilot, but it’s important that we stop to appreciate the small things that make up our everyday lives. Whether that’s your walk to work, your first coffee of the day or your evening workout, be mindful of your movements and appreciate the little things. This makes every day more enjoyable and enables us to live in the now

Try Meditation and Mindfulness

Meditation can cure so many things. It helps to reduce anxiety and is a great way to start the day. It helps you to clear your mind, relax and boost your focus, which is perfect for living in the now. A clear mind frees you up to think about what’s important and banishes negative thoughts. In particular, if you’ve been going through a stressful time, meditation can help to relieve the tension and bring you back into the now. Check out Mindfulness and Meditation guide

Move over to the slow lane

Sometimes we feel like we need to be living life at 100 miles an hour, cramming as much as we can into each day. That doesn’t just apply to daily chores like trying to fit in work, the gym, a drink with friends, three loads of washing, and paying your bills! It can apply to enjoyable activities too. Have you ever gone for a weekend break and tried to fill every second of the day so you don’t feel like you’ve wasted the experience?

The reality is that sometimes we feel bad for just sitting still – we feel like we should be busy. But if you truly want to embrace life and live in the now, you need to slow down. Remember that it’s OK to say no sometimes. If you would rather take a day to sit in the garden or watch movies, then do it! When you cram your days full you end up feeling exhausted, so take some time to unwind, relax, and recharge your batteries. This will help you to appreciate each day as it comes.

Make sure you love your job

Work is a part of our daily lives, so if you find yourself wishing away the weekdays and living only for the weekend, it might be time to re-evaluate. It’s impossible to live in the now and make the most of every day if you’re unhappy in your job. Rushing to get through the week is no way to live, make sure your job is something you love doing and you look forward to getting up for each morning.
